Music therapy is a flexible and creative therapy that provides children with the chance to engage with a therapist in a safe space, through the non-verbal act of making music. Music is usually improvised in the moment by the therapist around the clients sounds or movements. A variety of instruments are available for both therapist and child to play including a keyboard or piano, guitar, drums and various hand held percussion instruments such as maracas and tambourines. Through making music together, the therapist supports the child to express themselves and to use music as a way to communicate, explore feelings, develop physical skills, strengthen cognitive learning, and improve general mental health and wellbeing.
